SPECIAL VIDEO PROJECT – NORTH CAROLINA NURSING HOMES FIGHT COVID-19

COVID Video-General Assembly

NCHCFA has created a short video that provides a glimpse inside our state’s nursing homes and an introduction to the dedicated people who work there.

During the last three months, nursing homes across our state — and around the world — have faced tremendous challenges. We have battled a stealthy virus that has been particularly devastating to the frail and elderly residents we serve.

While we have done everything we can to protect our residents, so much has been out of our control. For months we battled this virus without the personal protective equipment and testing supplies we needed. North Carolina provided tremendous support, but these shortages affected the entire world.

Research has reinforced that the spread of the virus is largely out of our control. Studies from Harvard, Brown, and the University of Chicago all concluded that the single greatest factor that determines whether a nursing home has a COVID-19 outbreak is the location of the facility—if the virus is spreading in the larger community, it will enter the facility. The quality rating of the facility and the for-profit or not-for-profit status of a facility are not factors.

All of this has taken a tremendous toll on our residents and staff.

But one thing has remained constant during this pandemic—how much we care about the residents in North Carolina’s nursing homes.

Every day, 45,000 North Carolina residents show up for work in our state’s nursing homes. Because they care deeply. We all care—and we always will. We will keep doing everything we can, every day, to protect the residents we serve.
