Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized policy changes to Medicare Advantage (MA) that are intended to improve equity, access to care, and information for people with Medicare.  Nursing facilities that provide care to Medicare Advantage beneficiaries need to be aware of these changes in order to make sure the Medicare Advantage plans are following the new requirements.

Some of the items in the final rule include:

  • Clarification of clinical criteria guidelines to ensure people with MA receive access to the same medically necessary care they would receive in Traditional Medicare.
  • Streamlined prior authorization requirements, including adding continuity of care requirements and reducing disruptions for beneficiaries.
  • Requirement that approval of a prior authorization request for a course of treatment must be valid for as long as medically reasonable and necessary to avoid disruptions in care in accordance with applicable coverage criteria, the patient’s medical history, and the treating provider’s recommendation.

This session will review these, and other important items included in the Medicare Advantage final rule that nursing facility operators need to be aware of to guarantee that Medicare Advantage care and payments are properly handled.
