FutureCare NC was awarded approximately $2.5 million by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to establish the NC CareGivers Program to address the shortage of direct care workers (CNAs) in nursing homes.

Since March, the NC CareGivers Program has been reaching out to all the Skilled Nursing Facilities, Community Colleges, and Proprietary Schools to participate in the initiative. As of today, 229 Skilled Nursing Facilities, 52 Community Colleges and 11 Proprietary Schools have registered to participate.

October 1 through November 15, NC Caregivers had a media campaign marketing the program on television and radio. Additionally, marketing posters to recruit Nurse Aide students to participate in the NC CareGivers Program were mailed to the Community Colleges and Proprietary Schools on November 17th and to participating SNFs on November 18th. Currently, we have 210 students that have registered to participate in the NC CareGivers program. Thirty-four of these students are enrolled in a training program and eight have completed their program. If you have employed one of these eight NC CareGivers graduates, please email reneeb@futurecarenc.org.

Educational webinars are available for staff at participating SNFs. In October, the webinar was Introducing and Sustaining Organizational Change and in November the webinar session was Building on Trust. Both webinars are recorded and are available.
