Strengthen Behavioral Management Through Person-Centered Care

Sign up by August 27 to receive CMS-funded coaching and support

Behavioral health conditions are common in long-term care and directly impact resident well-being, staff satisfaction, and regulatory compliance. CMS continues to emphasize person-centered care and reducing unnecessary antipsychotic medication use, highlighting these priorities for nursing homes.

Behaviors such as agitation, wandering, and mood changes often reflect unmet needs or underlying conditions. Understanding the cause helps care teams develop more effective, individualized interventions. Additionally, antipsychotic stewardship focuses on identifying root causes of behavioral symptoms, prioritizing nonpharmacological approaches, and ensuring medications are used appropriately and monitored.

Person-centered care promotes dignity, independence, and quality of life by focusing on each resident’s preferences and goals. This approach can improve outcomes, increase resident satisfaction, and support compliance with CMS requirements, including 42 CFR § 483.21.

As the CMS-funded Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) for North Carolina, Health Quality Innovators (HQI) offers free support to nursing homes seeking to strengthen behavioral health services and person-centered care. Participating facilities receive guidance on assessment, management, staff education, and documentation.
