NC DHHS Releases Memo Regarding C. auris in NC
Public Health surveillance for Candida auris in North Carolina has detected a sharp rise in cases in 2026 compared to previous years.
C. auris can be multidrug-resistant and can cause life-threatening illness. It spreads easily in healthcare facilities and mostly affects people who are already very sick. People without risk factors generally do not become infected or colonized with C. auris.
In response to this increase, especially in high-risk settings, the NC Division of Public Health (NC DPH) is recommending that acute care hospitals consider admission screening for patients transferred from long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) and ventilator-capable skilled nursing facilities (vSNFs).
