Nursing Shortage by the Numbers
Nursing positions remain unfilled, causing a shortage of workers across North Carolina.
According to 2025 data from the NC Chamber Foundation and the NC Center on the Workforce for Health, one in eight registered nurse positions, one in three LPN roles, and one in five CNA jobs remain vacant across the state.
The NC Chamber Foundation and the NC Center on the Workforce for Health were recently featured in The Daily Tar Heel for their joint release of the second annual NC Health Talent Alliance workforce data analysis. Foundation Director of Workforce Competitiveness Vincent Ginski emphasized that the data is already guiding regional and statewide efforts to expand training, improve retention, and align public and private investments.
