How to Become a Nurse Aide in North Carolina

Nurse aides at nursing homes provide a substantial part of direct resident care and virtually all care not required to be administered by licensed nurses.

If you are interested in pursuing a job as a nurse aide, you should contact a local nursing home where you would like to work. (Click here to find a nursing home near you to ask about specific job openings.) Many nursing homes offer the classes necessary for training to become a nurse aide. Those who don't usually can arrange for classes at a local college.

When you apply to become a nurse aide, the nursing home will run a criminal background check as required by North Carolina law. Most nursing facilities also require a drug test.

If you have met the minimum requirements, the nursing home can arrange for the training. While you are training, you will work in the nursing home getting clinical experience as a nurse aide student. The minimum training time is 75 hours. The required time to complete training usually ranges from the required 75 hours to 120 days, depending on the nursing home. If the course is completed satisfactorily, you will be tested by an outside evaluator who will give you an exam which may be taken written or orally. You must successfully demonstrate clinical skills as part of the exam. The option exists to challenge the course by taking only the competency exam. Once you pass this exam, you will be listed as eligible on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry.

We encourage you to consider a career as a nurse aide. You will find it rewarding to provide care and comfort for nursing home residents.
