If you are interested in becoming a nursing home administrator in North Carolina, you will follow one of the following two procedures depending on your situation:
If you do NOT have training or licensing as a Nursing Home Administrator…
Write a letter to the North Carolina State Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators at the above address requesting an AIT (Administrator in Training) package. You will need to include $25. This amount will go toward your application fee when you apply.
To qualify for the AIT program, you must have completed two years of college or one year of college plus two years supervisory experience in a nursing home.
If your completed application is accepted, you will enter an internship program that will last between three months and one year with a minimum of 40 hours per week. This internship includes:
- Four correspondence courses from the UNC Chapel Hill School of Public Health
- A five day course in Chapel Hill run by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators.
- State and national board exams.
Once the internship coursework and exams are completed successfully, you will receive a license as a North Carolina Nursing Home Administrator.
If you have a license as a Nursing Home Administrator from another state…
Write a letter to the North Carolina State Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators at the above address requesting a reciprocity package. You will need to include $25. This amount will go toward your application fee when you apply.
Once your complete package has been received, an interview will be set up with the Board. You will then need to pass the North Carolina board exam, after which you will receive your license.
